Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster Relief Fundraiser

On March 23, 2011, our association participated with the Earl Miller Burns Japanese Garden, the Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center, Interval House and the City of Long Beach in a fund raiser and memorial tribute for the victims and survivors of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The event raised more than $14,500, which will be donated to the U.S./Japan Council Earthquake Relief Fund, where 100% of the contributions will be directed to medical and rescue efforts in Japan.

Mike Vaughn, President of the Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association, served as master of ceremonies. Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster presented to Consul General of Japan Junichi Ihara 1,000 origami cranes with a wish for peace and healing. Music performances included Yuzan Shirai on the Shakuhachi flute, Yoko Awaya on the Koto Harp and the Long Beach Kokoro Taiko group.
