“To create rapport between the cities by exchanging cultural, civic and educational ideas and issues
 and to promote better understanding and friendship between the United States and Japan.”

The Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association Program began in 1963 in the spirit of President Eisenhower’s 1956 1963-09-24 - Mayors Wade & Hirata w-Dr. John Kashiwabara Photo“People to People” program.  Long Beach Mayor Edwin Wade, Yokkaichi Mayor Sukenori Hirata, The Port of Long Beach, Friends of Yokkaichi and numerous citizens in both countries, established the first and one of the most successful sister cities.

The Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City Association runs 4 annual programs:  Trio Cultural Exchange, Environmental Summit, Yokkaichi English Fellows and Physicians Exchange.  Click on the links to learn more.

2013 Kizuna CoverYokkaichi City has published, “Kizuna, The Bonds Beyond the Ocean”, to commemorate the 50 Anniversary of the Long Beach-Yokkaichi Sister City association. This beautiful book begins in 1963 and chronicles the programs and events celebrated between our two cities.

Congratulations to Mayor Toshiyuki Tanaka and his dedicated, hardworking staff who worked for months compiling historical photos and documents to create this memorable book.  Click here to view “Kizuna”.

1 Teacher and 2 high school students visit the host city each year in late July on an 18-day cultural exchange tour.

  Assistant Teaching English in Yokkaichi, Japan?

Each year LBUSD teachers or Cal State Long Beach graduates have the opportunity to serve two years in a paid position as assistant English language teachers at the elementary and middle school levels in Yokkaichi, Japan.  LEARN MORE.

Each summer 4 students and 1 chaperone from Long Beach go to the Yokkaichi Environmental Center to study environmental issues with students from Japan and China.  LEARN MORE.

2006 Doctors


This is a public citizen’s committee and open to the members of the public interested in the goals and ideas of the association.

Each February doctors from the Yokkaichi Muniicpal Hospital visit Long Beach to study medical issues at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and other local hospitals.  LEARN MORE.

This successful program began in 2002 and 48 doctors, including RNs, have gained invaluable knowledge through this program.

Three physicians from Yokkaichi arrived in February 2017 and were here for a few weeks. Click here to see photos of the doctors during their stay in Long Beach.
